FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS
BACKGROUND
With the rise in EMR Syndrome among all ages and across all continents, more and more physicians and healthcare providers are diagnosing and treating individuals who have become ill, and often disabled, by exposures to man-made electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Within the health field at large, there is a heightened understanding that biological health hinges on a fine-tuned electrochemical balance. Man-made electromagnetic radiation disrupts the balance of the cell, interfering with its biological integrity and functioning. In the process, critical cell membranes and molecules are damaged, leading to injury to the body’s neurologic, reproductive, and immune systems. In support, a growing library of sound, broad-based scientific research has identified wireless radiation emissions from communications technology and dirty electricity as biological toxicants that are impacting the health and well-being of the population. The increased incidence of EMR Syndrome in the modern world is clear evidence of this harm. Since the early 1990s, when cellphones began to sweep the marketplace, two-thirds of leading chronic illnesses have doubled or tripled; the public has been unknowingly paying for wireless convenience with their health.

Physicians for Safe Technology helps connect the dots between wireless electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and many modern disease states. Grounded in scientific research and references, this informative site presents a clinical approach for EMR Syndrome, derived from several sources. These include the EUROPAEM (European Academy of Environmental Medicine) and the Austrian Medical Association Guidelines which have been used all over the world — as well as the work of many researchers and even physicians who have suffered from EMR Syndrome. EMR Syndrome can sometimes be complex, and is frequently reported in conjunction with multiple chemical sensitivities and/or other environmental exposures. These add up to a body burden of toxins, also known as the “total load” factor. Many times, however, just removing the source of wireless radiation and reducing levels of exposure will resolve the patient’s symptoms.
Summary of Guidelines:
- Listen to the patient’s symptoms with care and attention
- Take a full history and physical
- Consider relevant lab tests
- Use an EMF Questionnaire to identify sources and relationship of EMF to illness:
- Recommend a diagnostic "EMF vacation" or camping trip
- Have the patient keep a detailed symptom diary
- Help the patient design exposure experiments to confirm or deny a suspected cause
- Encourage the patient to have EMF levels evaluated at home and work by a professional building biologist
- Advise the patient to take simple steps toward reducing EMF exposure
- Encourage a healthy lifestyle
- Use existing diagnostic codes as indicated
The following ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Codes are applicable to EMR Syndrome, and can be used as first-listed diagnoses; choice of first-listed diagnosis may be influenced by reimbursement or other factors.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) was established in 1965 as an independent association of physicians and scientists, to advance the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases arising from environmental factors. Recognizing that EMR Syndrome is a growing problem worldwide, the AAEM seeks to research and put into practice safe, effective treatments… educate medical professionals… and provide cautionary measures regarding the regulation of modern technology, including smart meters.
Many AAEM members are board certified by one or more of the 24 medical boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. For a list of member practitioners, click here.

NAEM is a leading source of Environmental Medicine Education. NAEM helps to heighten awareness of environmentally driven conditions and has built a community of clinicians empowered with the tools to apply environmental medicine in practice. NAEM partnered with the leading experts in each field to extensively update ten clinical guidelines with cutting edge education and clinical pearls to help our clinicians identify and treat patients with complex environmental exposure. Each clinical guideline is paired with an informative patient handout and detailed webinar. In addition, NAEM has an extensive library of webinars and past conferences, an active clinical forum and will be launching new educational programs this year. To find a NAEM provider, please click here and search on our interactive map. You can also join our organization as a professional, allied professional or supporting member and gain access to our clinical guideline resources and extensive webinar library. Global Medical Conference (Free Download)
The 2021 EMF Medical Conference was a joint offering from the Electromagnetic Safety Alliance and Acknowledging Health Care. This Conference was approved for CME credits for licensed healthcare practitioners. Although credits are no longer available, we are now offering you the chance to view, at no charge, all the videos associated with this Conference. Presentations were made by 1) internationally-recognized scientists who have published in the field of Bio-Electromagnetics; 2) knowledgeable healthcare practitioners who treat people for EMF-associated illness and injuries; 3) building engineers who test EMF exposures and mitigate hazards. The Conference will provide a high-quality education and training experience. We recommend you review the program schedule and the list of faculty members.

Dr. Sharon Goldberg’s Take-Home Messages
- All electromagnetic fields have biological effects.
- EMF biological effects impact everyone, whether they feel them or not.
- EMF exposures cause oxidative stress, a major contributing factor in all inflammatory diseases.
- EMF biological effects present as a wide variety of symptoms and conditions.
- EMF exposure reduction, combined with foundational health support, works fast… and can be used by all healthcare practitioners in any kind of practice.
“The current mindset that we have, particularly in medicine, of thinking that the electromagnetic environment is irrelevant to health has to change... there is so much science to show that this is simply not the case.”
~ Sharon Goldberg, MD

Panagopoulos, D. (2023). Electromagnetic Fields of Wireless Communications: Biological and Health Effects, CRC Press, Taylor Francis Group. Biophysicist Dimitris J. Panagopoulos, PhD is a world authority on the biological and health effects of electromagnetic fields, including radiofrequency radiation. His new publication serves as a textbook on the study and treatment of this important, emerging health issue. Dr. Panagopoulos has conducted extensive research and published more than 40 influential, peer-reviewed scientific papers on the topic. Electromagnetic Fields of Wireless Communications not only compiles a vast body of research on the effects of EMFs but also serves as a clarion call for the adoption of biologically-based exposure limits. In light of emerging technologies such as 5G, the book emphasizes the importance of the continuation of vigorous research and the need for public health policies that protect individuals from harm.
