THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

The natural spectrum of electromagnetic radiation (EMR), which includes the sun, has existed for billions of years. Human beings evolved amid these natural electromagnetic fields, withstanding and even thriving in them. In the late 19th century, however, scientists began to experiment with EMR, creating a new entity: man-made, artificial EMR.

Unlike natural EMR, which is primarily static in nature, man-made EMR is produced by electrical circuits that force electrons to oscillate in specific directions. Additionally, man-made EMR, in the form of wireless radiation, is pulsed and modulated to carry information, and transmitted at targeted frequencies. In summary, while natural EMR is generated by natural processes, artificial EMR is produced by human-made technologies. These manipulations create waves that are radically different from natural waves — and have been shown to alter and disrupt the biological activity of living organisms. As a result, in thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies, man-made EMR, including “wireless,” has been linked to adverse, biological health effects, including EMR Syndrome.

As with most medical conditions, each individual with EMR Syndrome may be impacted or injured to varying degrees across the EMR spectrum. Some people are more symptomatic in the presence of cell phones, smart meters, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, smart watches, and smart devices — which are in the mid-to-high frequency range of EMR. Others are more impacted by lower-frequency electromagnetic fields, such as those generated by powerlines, electrical wiring, LED lighting, household appliances, and other products that emit dirty electricity. A significant percentage of people with EMR Syndrome are also environmentally challenged by chemicals and food.

See GLOSSARY below for definitions of technical terms.

HOW TO MEASURE EMR

Testing EMR, including EMF (electromagnetic fields) requires specific tools for accurate measurements. The electromagnetic spectrum is vast, and most common sources of radiation are invisible. EMR and EMF meters can pinpoint high emissions that are not obvious, such as faulty wiring or strong signals from a neighbor’s Wi-Fi router or smart meter. Meters can also identify wireless devices that emit radiation even when turned “off,” such as a printer or smart appliance. Additionally, if you implement protective measures, such as shielding materials, a meter is the only way to confirm they are working, reducing radiation, and not causing a boomerang effect.

Specialized meters for different types of EMR:

  1. Radiofrequency (RF) meters. These meters are designed to measure high-frequency electromagnetic fields from wireless sources, such as:
    a) Devices: Wi-Fi routers, wireless headphones, fitness/health trackers, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, smart homes, and gaming systems
    b) Cell towers: antennas or 4G or 5G cellular networks
    c) Smart meters: wireless meters for electricity, solar panels, gas, water, and propane
    d) Appliances: microwave ovens, smart appliances, and baby monitors
    e) Vehicles: “smart” cars, sensors, and EMR-emitting modules/devices
  2. Low frequency (ELF-VLF) meters. These meters measure magnetic and electric fields emitted from the lower end of the electromagnetic spectrum. Common sources include powerlines, electrical wiring, large appliances, computer monitors, and late-model vehicles.
  3. Dirty electricity meters. Dirty electricity is a form of electrical pollution caused by voltage transients or “line noise,” traveling along a building's wiring. This noise is produced by devices that chop up the electrical sine wave or convert power from AC to DC or DC to AC, including solar power systems, smart meters, dimmer switches, fluorescent and LED lighting, computers, and other modern electronics — including components in late-model vehicles. If you don’t have a meter, an AM transistor radio is a simple way to test for dirty electricity.
SMART METERS

In order to measure electricity, gas, and water usage, local utility companies install meters on their customers’ properties. These utility meters generally fall into two categories — analog or digital (some digital meters are commonly referred to as “smart”). Analog meters operate mechanically and do not contain computerized electronic components. They have been used successfully for decades with no history of adverse health effects or safety issues.

In contrast, digital “smart” meters — including non-transmitting digital AMI, AMR, ERT, PLC, Smart, etc. — are fully electronic and use computerized components. Since the introduction of digital meters during the past 20 years, people around the world have reported becoming ill and electromagnetically injured following installations. By nature of a faulty design that utilizes a “switching mode power supply” and other electronic components, digital meters conduct frequencies through the wiring of the house — introducing noise (dirty electricity) into the living space. In addition, most digital meters transmit data wirelessly and some communicate directly with smart appliances, creating EMR emissions inside and outside the home. This unprecedented exposure to man-made electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is causing serious harm to the health of an untold number of consumers and it has left many impacted by EMR Syndrome.

This is an example of an analog meter.
It has clock-like wheels with hands that turn.

This is an example of a digital “smart” meter.

SAFETY TIPS

SMART METER SAFETY TIPS

  • Stand your ground. Do not let your local utility company remove an analog utility meter and replace it with any version of a digital meter (smart or otherwise). Most “opt-out” meters are digital and will create dirty electricity, even if they do not transmit data wirelessly.
  • If you already have a digital smart meter, request that your local utility company provide you with a safe analog meter. If they refuse, keep appealing… then submit a formal complaint to your state regulatory agency. Smart meters are regulated by the state.
  • Never stand close to any utility meter to determine whether it’s analog or digital/smart. Instead, take a photo from 10 feet away, then enlarge it. Compare with photos shown above.
  • Turn off other sources of man-made EMR in your living space, e.g., your cell phone, Wi-Fi router, smart TV, smart watch, etc. Be sure to disconnect all DECT cordless phones; they transmit and conduct unusually high amounts of radiation. Multiple wireless EMR sources compound your exposure and add to the emissions of a smart meter.
  • Don’t be fooled: a small number of manufacturers are disguising the displays of their digital smart meters to mimic analog meters. Confirm that your meter is safe by measuring with a radiofrequency (RF) meter.

EMF SAFETY TIPS

  • Keep children and pets away from all wireless equipment, including digital utility meters, Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, cell phones and other wireless devices.
  • Remove sources of wireless radiation, including cordless DECT home phones (replace with corded phones), Wi-Fi routers (use ethernet), microwave ovens and wireless baby monitors.
  • Never use or store a cell phone or wireless devices against any part of the body or in your pockets.
  • If you use Wi-Fi, shut it down at night for a more restful sleep.
  • Protect your sleeping environment by unplugging electronic devices in your bedroom, such as lamps, TVs, and clocks.
  • Use a battery-operated alarm clock.
  • Stay away from cell towers.
  • To save electricity and lower levels of dirty electricity, unplug ALL power chargers for cell phones, battery operated equipment, cameras, etc. — when not using them for charging. They are considered vampires that eat up expensive electricity.

Here are the best ways to protect yourself and your family from cellphone radiation:

  • NEVER hold your phone directly against your head.
  • When TALKING, use the speaker setting or an air-tube headset.
  • TEXT instead of talking whenever possible.
  • Make only SHORT and essential calls.
  • Use AIRPLANE MODE when is not phone in use, with all radiation-generating functions turned OFF, e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, locators, hotspots, etc.
  • Keep your phone out of pockets, socks, and bras. Phone manufacturers warn users not to hold wireless devices against their body.
  • AVOID using a cellphone in cars, buses, trains, airplanes, and elevators; your phone must work harder to get a signal through metal, increasing power levels and radiation exposure to all occupants.
  • The weaker or lower your signal bars, the harder your phone works, producing higher levels of radiation.
  • Download movies, then switch to AIRPLANE MODE to watch without radiation exposure.
  • NEVER SLEEP with your phone on or near your bed. Plug it in to charge in another room—do not charge wirelessly.
  • When at home, use a wired landline, if available in your community. Oppose all efforts to expire landline phone technology.
  • PROXIMITY IS EVERYTHING. Keep a maximum distance from all radiation-emitting devices.

NOTE: Protective phone cases that help reduce exposure to cellphone radiation are growing in popularity. Do your research and choose a top-rated product for effective protection. The EMR Syndrome Alliance does not endorse specific brands.

GLOSSARY

Airplane Mode: A setting on portable electronic devices intended to disable all wireless communication, including cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. On newer phones, certain wireless features are deactivated through the phone’s settings.

AM Transistor Radio Test: This is a quick method to detect dirty electricity. Simply tune an AM transistor radio to a silent space between stations. As the radio is moved from place to place, a sudden increase in noise or interference indicates a source of dirty electricity.

Boomerang Effect: The phenomenon in which radiofrequency radiation from a cellphone or other wireless device reflects off shielding materials and room surfaces, causing the emissions to reverberate within an enclosed space and potentially intensify overall exposure.

Dirty Electricity: Erratic spikes, surges, and high-frequency noise produced by modern electronic devices.

Electromagnetic Spectrum: The complete range of frequencies of electromagnetic waves.

EMF vs. EMR: EMF refers to the physical region of influence around an electrical source, while EMR is the energy that travels outward from that region as a wave. Both terms are commonly used in discussions of health and safety near electrical sources.

Frequency: The number of periodic vibrations or waves per unit of time, usually expressed in hertz (Hz).

Modulate: To vary the amplitude (range), frequency, or phase (cycle) of an electromagnetic wave.

Oscillate: To swing or move back and forth; to vary regularly between maximum and minimum values.

Pulsed: Pertaining to very short, highly variable bursts of electromagnetic waves.

Static: Descriptive of bodies, masses, and forces at rest or in equilibrium; inactive.

Wireless: Operating and powered by waves of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) rather than by electric wire.
